Gicumbi’s Hidden gem: Miyove’s river, forests and birdlife poised for tourism growth
Some residents of Miyove Sector say they are blessed with natural attractions, including a wide and clean water body, as well as various species of birds that could attract many visitors. This is quite different from past narratives, where it was said that there were places where girls who became pregnant at home were once drowned.
Along this river, there are already a few investors who have started putting up infrastructure to accommodate tourists, although they are still few. The area has rich natural resources that could be further developed, helping position the district among those that support and complement Kigali City as a tourism destination.
These views are shared by the leadership of Gicumbi District, which has also informed investors that the river area holds strong tourism potential and is suitable for investment projects that can generate income.
During a recent meeting held on March 26, 2026, aimed at showcasing investment opportunities in Gicumbi, organized in collaboration with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), Gicumbi District authorities, and the Private Sector Federation (PSF), stakeholders highlighted various environmental resources that could be sustainably developed, especially around the river, to benefit different communities.
The Mayor of Gicumbi District, Emmanuel Nzabonimpa, stated that the river is one of the most beautiful natural sites showcasing the district’s green and fresh environment.
He said:”Among the natural attractions we have in our district is this river. We have partners helping us protect the surrounding forests, and it is an area shared by Miyove and Nyankenke sectors, as well as part of Burera District. It is an ideal place for the construction of high-quality hotels.”
He added:”There are animals you rarely find elsewhere, especially different species of birds. As a district, what we have done is to look for partners to help protect this ecosystem.”
He further explained that the district is carrying out awareness campaigns to ensure these resources are used sustainably, and that the opportunities around the river are still largely untapped. Building hotels, he noted, would ease access and improve services for visitors.
Miyove Sector is also known for gold mining activities. According to district authorities, people working in these mines need accommodation, hotels, and coffee shops, creating additional investment opportunities in the area.
