UNDP Urges Africa to Empower Youth in Driving Digital Health Innovation
On Wednesday morning, Ms. Nema Taiba Chinbuah, Deputy Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Africa, participated in a panel discussion during the Africa Health Tech Summit 2025 (AHTS2025). The session focused on the theme “Youths in Action: Shaping Africa’s Digital Health Future.”

In her remarks, Nema Taiba emphasized that Africa’s youth possess immense potential and opportunities to design reliable and sustainable solutions to the challenges affecting the continent’s health systems.
She noted that UNDP considers investing in the creativity and innovation of young people as one of the most effective ways to build strong, people-centered, and resilient health systems.
Ms. Taiba also highlighted the TimbuktooAfrica initiative Africa’s first large-scale innovation and capacity-building ecosystem designed to connect countries across the continent and promote youth-led, technology-driven solutions for better health outcomes.
This initiative empowers young innovators and researchers to create solutions that address challenges in health, education, agriculture, and other critical sectors through modern technology and research.
In her message, Nema Taiba stressed that “investing in youth-led innovation is investing in the development of people-centered and resilient health systems.”
She further stated that Africa’s youth have the ability to transform how health services are delivered by leveraging technology to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and expand access especially in rural and underserved communities.

UNDP has long prioritized supporting transformation in the health sector through partnerships with African governments, the private sector, and youth-led organizations. These efforts aim to ensure that Africa builds a strong health system that effectively uses data and technology to manage and monitor public health.
UNDP calls on Africa to place youth at the center of health transformation as they are the true drivers of innovation capable of shaping a healthier, safer, and more sustainable.
