Gicumbi: Veterinary professionals urged to embrace training and technology to enhance professionalism

Gicumbi District is among the areas with a strong base of professional livestock farmers, attracting people who come to learn, exchange knowledge, and acquire improved breeds, particularly in pig farming and high milk-producing cattle.

This was highlighted on March 27, 2026, during the closing of a three-day training held from March 25–27 for veterinary professionals. The training took place in Kageyo Sector, Gicumbi Cell, at Vision Agribusiness Farm (VAF) Ltd.

The training was organized in collaboration with the Rwanda Council of Veterinary Doctors (RCVD) and the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB).

The event was attended by the Mayor of Gicumbi District, Emmanuel Nzabonimpa, who commended the veterinary professionals who participated from different parts of the country.

He said: “It is a pride for our district to have an entrepreneur like Jean Claude Shirimpumu, who established such a facility that is now playing a key role in improving pig breeds in the district and serving as a practical knowledge hub for veterinary professionals and farmers aiming to practice modern livestock farming.”

The training brought together veterinary professionals from various districts and focused on reproductive technologies, particularly artificial insemination in pigs.

Participants appreciated the quality of the training, especially the practical sessions on artificial insemination and deeper understanding of pig reproduction. Some noted, “Seeing and practicing is better than just hearing.”

They added that the hands-on experience gave them confidence to provide better services to farmers and to promote improved pig breeds through artificial insemination.

Dr. Uwumukiza Duhabwanayo Bernardine, representing the Rwanda Council of Veterinary Doctors, reminded participants of the importance of continuous professional development, noting that technology and innovation are constantly evolving. She emphasized the need for veterinary professionals to keep up with these changes to effectively support farmers and advance the livestock sector.

Dr. Safari Sylvestre from RAB, one of the trainers, emphasized that veterinary work requires integrity and competence, as animal health should never be handled carelessly.
He also reminded participants to adhere to the official pricing set by the veterinary council when providing artificial insemination services, noting that the government has subsidized access to quality semen to ensure affordability for farmers.

Additionally, he highlighted that these services are being made more accessible through distribution to health centers, health posts, hospitals, and sector offices, using drones in partnership with Zipline.

Pig farming remains one of the most productive livestock activities with quick returns. However, farmers are encouraged to adopt professional practices, while veterinary professionals are urged to continuously upgrade their skills and embrace technology to access and share up-to-date information.

Veterinary professionals were shown different approaches to delivering services to livestock farmers.
Veterinarians receive training and take notes in their notebooks to ensure they do not forget what they have learned.
The Mayor of Gicumbi District, Emmanuel Nzabonimpa, followed closely how the training was being conducted.
During the training, they were shown how to put what they learned into practice.
During training, they are often very curious and eager to learn.
