PM calls on southern province residents to boost agricultural yields and make president Kagame proud

Prime Minister Dr. Nsengiyumva Justin told residents of Nyaruguru District that President Kagame regards them as hardworking people committed to self-reliance, and that he is always delighted to hear about their achievements.

He made these remarks on Monday, September 22, 2022, during a two-day working visit to the Southern Province. He began his tour by officially launching the 2026A agricultural planting season in Urwonjya marshland, located in Nyagisozi Sector, Nyaruguru District.

In his message to the community, the Prime Minister urged residents to work hard and strive for self-improvement, stressing that it is possible. He stated: “Current crop yields stand at 5 tons per hectare, but if we work diligently, we can reach 10 tons per hectare. To achieve this, we must cultivate every available space, both in marshlands and on hillsides.”

He encouraged the people of the Southern Province to use improved seeds, apply both organic and inorganic fertilizers, and adopt irrigation methods to prepare for the challenges of climate change.

The Prime Minister emphasized that Rwanda aims to double its agricultural output. He called on ministers responsible for agriculture to work closely with farmers, cooperatives, and other partners to strengthen collaboration with the government in the fight against poverty. “When you are happy, the President of the Republic is also happy. You should help him to remain happy,” he said.

As part of his visit, Dr. Nsengiyumva also toured Mata Tea Company, located in Mata Sector, to assess the progress made in tea farming and value addition, as well as efforts to increase the volume of tea exports.
