Akagera National Park lion population triples in 10 years
On August 10, 2025, as the world marked International Lion Day, Akagera National Park announced a remarkable growth in its lion population over the past decade.
According to a statement posted on the park’s official X account, lions were reintroduced to Akagera in 2015 after a 20-year absence, starting with seven individuals, including five females. Since then, the population has steadily grown, reaching 62 today.
Established in 1934, Akagera National Park spans 1,120 square kilometers and is home to some of the world’s most iconic wildlife species, including lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffaloes.
International Lion Day, first celebrated in 2013, aims to raise global awareness about lion conservation, highlight the challenges they face, and promote action to protect their future in the wild.
