Powerful 8.8 magnitude quake triggers Pacific tsunami alert
Several countries bordering the Pacific Ocean have been urged to prepare for a possible tsunami following a powerful earthquake that recently struck eastern Russia.
The earthquake occurred on July 29, 2025, registering a magnitude of 8.8, making it one of the strongest quakes ever recorded globally.
Various agencies, including meteorological services, immediately began issuing warnings to countries along the Pacific Ocean, urging them to take precautionary measures in anticipation of a tsunami.
U.S. President Donald Trump, through a post on X, called on people to stay informed with the latest tsunami updates to better understand how to protect themselves.
He stated, “Due to the powerful earthquake in the Pacific Ocean, a tsunami could affect nearby regions such as Hawaii and Japan.”
It is anticipated that the tsunami could strike Hawaii with waves potentially reaching up to three meters high.
The Governor of Hawaii, Josh Green, urged residents to begin moving to higher ground and areas less likely to be affected by the tsunami to avoid danger.
He said, “It won’t just stop at the shoreline—it may affect all the islands.”
This earthquake ranks as the sixth most powerful in the world, equaling the strength of the 2010 quake in Chile, which claimed over 500 lives.
A tsunami is a seaquake that causes sudden flooding. When it reaches the shore, the water travels at very high speeds (up to 800 kilometers per hour) toward the coast. It can destroy buildings, sweep away people, and cause massive damage to coastal areas.
