The enigmatic Nkotsi spring: A legacy of Rwanda’s royal heritage
This week, Greenafrica.rw and FINE HILLS TV conducted an in-depth interview with Joseph Hategekimana, an elder from Nkotsi sector in Musanze district, Northern Province.
He shared fascinating insights about the extraordinary Nkotsi na Bikara (Nkotsi and Bikara) spring, a site steeped in cultural and historical significance, located within Buhanga Eco-Park in Nyakinama.
The elder explained that this spring holds a special place in Rwanda’s traditional heritage, as it was where Rwanda’s kings performed a purification ritual before ascending to the throne.
This ceremonial act was considered essential to imbue the monarch with fortune, strength, and the authority to lead effectively.
The spring is renowned for its pristine waters, which are safe for drinking and cooking, without causing any adverse effects to users.
It remains an untouched natural marvel, immune to human alterations. Any attempt to modify or expand it is said to result in dire consequences, including death, owing to the spiritual power surrounding it.
