Nyagatare: Akagera NP provides Over RWF 285 million to improve the welfare of communities living around the park

On this Sunday, 23 November 2025, Akagera National Park handed over RWF 285,913,418 to Nyagatare District through the Park Tourism Revenue Sharing program. The support aims to enhance development projects that improve the welfare of communities living near the Park and help them achieve better living conditions.

This annual contribution is allocated to the sectors bordering Akagera National Park, Karangazi and Rwimiyaga. The funds support development initiatives intended to uplift community livelihoods and prevent activities that might harm the Park.

Between 2019 and 2024, Nyagatare District received a total of RWF 686,262,581 through this program. Of this, RWF 568,019,518 was invested in infrastructure projects while RWF 118,243,063 supported income-generating community initiatives. These funds have been used for various projects aimed at improving development and living standards for communities surrounding the Park.

The support has significantly contributed to development in areas bordering the Park. Implemented projects include the construction of solar-powered water points, modern Early Childhood Development centers (ECDs), small community markets, extension of electricity to households that previously lacked power, the purchase of science equipment for schools, and other community welfare activities.

Income-generating programs have also been supported, including the distribution of small livestock, promotion of diversified livestock farming, and assistance to residents engaged in handicrafts and small businesses.

This initiative has helped residents of Karangazi and Rwimiyaga sectors lift themselves out of poverty and improve their living standards. Many community members say the program has enabled them to benefit directly from tourism revenues generated by Akagera National Park, strengthening their commitment to conserving it.

Officials from Nyagatare District and the management of Akagera National Park stated that the program will continue to promote community development and enhance collaboration in conserving the environment and biodiversity in a sustainable manner.

In addition to Nyagatare, Akagera National Park also provided development support to other neighboring districts:

Kayonza District: RWF 857,740,255, Gatsibo District: RWF 132,346,327, Nyagatare District: RWF 285,913,418.

In total, RWF 1,286,000,000 was distributed to the three districts in 2025.

All these funds support community development, strengthen the connection between residents and the conservation of the Park, and demonstrate that tourism provides tangible benefits that return directly to the people.
