Musanze’s urban renewal sparks economic optimism

As Musanze advances through the second phase of its urban renewal, outdated plots and aging buildings are being replaced with modern structures.

Residents of Musanze District express that these developments are enhancing their confidence and providing new opportunities for job creation, aiming for greater self-improvement.

In Musanze District, new buildings continue to rise as part of the city’s renovation efforts.

New multi-story buildings are emerging, replacing structures that, in some cases, were over 60 years old and no longer aligned with contemporary standards.

Tugengwenayo Théonas, head of the Musanze City Renovation Committee, reflects on the city’s transformation since 2016, noting a significant shift in development.

He states, “Some believed that constructing multi-story buildings in Musanze was unfeasible, citing the city’s foundation atop waterlogged land. This misconception hindered modern development, evident in the fact that before 1994, only two multi-story buildings existed: the main Ruhengeri hospital and the current Musanze District headquarters.”

Modern buildings in Musanze City constructed in a contemporary style.

He adds, “This deterred substantial investment, as the city lacked suitable infrastructure. Efforts to modernize were limited to superficial changes like repainting or roof repairs, without expanding usable space.”

Following Musanze’s designation as a secondary city supporting Kigali, investment surged. The initial phase in 2016 focused on developing 45 plots along the Kigali-Musanze highway and adjacent areas leading to the Kariyeri food market, encompassing the Cyabararika, Mpenge, and Kigombe cells.

Tugengwenayo notes that Musanze City’s renovation progress is impressive.

In this phase, 22 buildings have been completed, with 13 more under construction. The ongoing second phase plans for an additional 29 buildings, with 9 already finished and the remaining 20 in various stages of development.

Resident Dukunzumuremyi Claver observes, “Before the renovation, the city had old, small, and dilapidated buildings. Now, these are being replaced with structures that enhance the city’s value and appearance. Visitors can see Rwanda’s progress. Without these developments, we couldn’t truly call it a city.”

Each new building, upon becoming operational, provides employment for over 200 individuals in sectors such as commerce, services, and maintenance, significantly reducing unemployment, especially among the youth.

In the next five years, all buildings in Musanze’s city center are expected to meet modern standards. The urban renewal initiative also extends to structures in Musanze District’s urban sectors and surrounding areas.

Musanze City’s renovation will be executed in five phases, with the current focus on the second phase.
