MINEMA warns of heavy rains likely to cause disasters at the end of October

The Ministry in Charge of Emergency Management (MINEMA) has warned that heavy rainfall expected towards the end of October 2025 may trigger floods, landslides, and lightning strikes.

The public is urged to remain vigilant and follow the guidance provided by relevant authorities to prevent possible disasters.

In its public notice, the ministry indicated that from October 23 to 31, rainfall levels may rise to a point where floods and landslides could occur, urging residents especially those in high-risk areas to take precautionary measures.

The Rwanda Meteorology Agency (Meteo Rwanda) had earlier forecasted above-average rainfall across several parts of the country during October, particularly in the Western and Northern provinces.

According to Meteo Rwanda, the short rainy season (Umuhindo) will end in December 2025, with rainfall between 250 and 300 millimeters expected in most parts of the Western and Northern provinces, while other areas may receive between 200 and 250 millimeters.

The public is encouraged to heed warnings and preparedness measures against heavy rain and strong winds, particularly in regions prone to floods and landslides.

A report from the Ministry of Environment shows that between 2014 and 2023, natural disasters claimed 1,595 lives and injured 2,368 others. Of these, lightning strikes killed 538 people, landslides 425, floods 307, heavy rain 315, while strong winds caused 10 deaths.
