Gicumbi: Residents near lake Muhazi dream of introducing car ferry services for tourists

Lake Muhazi is one of the key tourist attractions contributing to visitor numbers in Gicumbi District. Although there are several other tourism sites in the district, plans are underway to further develop these areas to attract more investors and increase tourist visits.

These remarks were made on March 25, 2026, during a field visit organized in collaboration with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB). Participants noted that increased investment could significantly boost tourism in Gicumbi and create substantial financial opportunities for investors.

During the visit, it was observed that residents living near Lake Muhazi, particularly in Bukure Sector, Rwesero Cell, appreciate the existing developments such as modern hotels. However, they highlighted a major challenge: the lake is accessed from both sides, making it difficult to cross from one side to the other.

Currently, crossing the lake remains a challenge, especially for visitors with vehicles. They are forced to drive around the lake via the Gicumbi–Kigali road, which is a long and inconvenient route.

This is because Lake Muhazi borders Gicumbi, Gasabo, and Rwamagana districts, covering a large geographical area.

Emmanuel Ngendahimana, a representative of the private sector in Bukure Sector, said that while the lake attracts many visitors, there is a need to introduce ferry services capable of transporting vehicles.

This, he explained, would allow tourists to explore all sides of the lake and fully enjoy its natural beauty.

He said:”I am among those providing boat transport services for visitors, which helps us generate income. However, if we had the capacity to transport vehicles across the lake, it would make our work easier. Some visitors want to explore areas closer to the Gicumbi–Gasabo side but are forced to leave their cars behind and use small boats.”

He added that such a service would also make it easier for visitors to exit through another district without having to return the same way.

Gicumbi District is home to several tourist attractions, including the burial sites of six kings and four queens, located in Rutare Sector. These sites attract visitors interested in Rwanda’s history and educational tours.

There is also a historical site marking the beginning of the liberation struggle, including a bunker where the President once stayed while preparing for the war.

Additionally, the district has rivers rich in bird species, offering opportunities for eco-tourism investments such as hotels and other hospitality services. Some of these rivers are already used for boat crossings.

Josiane Uwineza, a resident of Rwesero Cell near Lake Muhazi, explained that the area supports various income-generating activities. These include fish farming, small bars, and local trade. She personally sells small fish and has expanded into farming and livestock rearing, including cows, pigs, and chickens, which have improved her livelihood.

The Mayor of Gicumbi District, Emmanuel Nzabonimpa, emphasized that the district has diverse natural attractions. He said the local government is actively encouraging private investment and is ready to support investors interested in developing tourism projects.

He stated:”We have Lake Muhazi, which attracts many visitors, but we also have other natural sites that we are preparing for development. We are ready to engage with investors, facilitate their projects, and work together to improve services for tourists.”

Authorities in Gicumbi also noted that road infrastructure is being improved to facilitate movement and ensure that investors can deliver high-quality services to tourists more efficiently.

There are people engaged in fish farming in Lake Muhazi.
They are planning to acquire a ferry to transport vehicles across the water.
They say that anyone who invests in projects at Lake Muhazi could earn significant profits.
Uwineza Josiane says she started small with livestock farming and poultry trading, and it has gradually helped her become a professional farmer.
Ngendahimana Emmanuel, who represents the private sector in Bukure Sector, says they are considering how to introduce a ferry that can transport vehicles.
Emmanuel Nzabonimpa, the Mayor of Gicumbi District, says they are ready to facilitate and support those who want to invest in projects in Gicumbi.
