A Rwf 400 billion modern city to transform tourism on the shores of Lake Ruhondo

A groundbreaking Rwf 400 billion urban project is set to rise on the shores of Lake Ruhondo, with plans underway to expand and elevate tourism in this region. The ambitious initiative, currently being finalized, aims to bolster the local economy and showcase Musanze District’s rural beauty.

During a Musanze District Interagency Committee meeting on Friday, August 30, 2024, authorities unveiled this transformative project, highlighting its potential to redefine the district’s tourism landscape.

Claudien Nsengimana, the Mayor of Musanze District, shared updates on discussions with the investor spearheading the city’s development.

He said: “We are in advanced talks with an investor who has already committed Rwf 5 billion towards acquiring land for this project. It’s a process that is steadily moving forward.”

Residents Anticipate Growth and Progress

Communities in the areas bordering Lake Ruhondo, such as the Gacaca, Remera, and Gashaki sectors, have long awaited development to improve their livelihoods. The district continues to drive tourism efforts, with attractions such as the iconic mountain gorillas contributing to national foreign exchange earnings. The proposed city is expected to complement these efforts by offering unique lakeside experiences.

Nsengimana emphasized the importance of harnessing Lake Ruhondo’s potential:
“This initiative will enhance our tourism portfolio. After visiting the gorillas, tourists will have another stunning destination to explore, complete with breathtaking views and state-of-the-art facilities.”

Transforming Lake Ruhondo’s Image

Unlike other developed lake regions in Rwanda, such as Kivu and Muhazi, residents say Lake Ruhondo has lagged behind in infrastructure and opportunities.

Stephano Rukundo, a local resident, expressed optimism:
“While lakes like Kivu and Muhazi have rapidly developed with hotels and recreational facilities, we’ve felt left out. This investment will bring much-needed change, making this area a prime destination and giving us a sense of pride.”

Infrastructure to Pave the Way

To facilitate the city’s construction, Musanze District plans to upgrade critical infrastructure, including a 35-kilometer road connecting Konkaseri-Remera-Gashaki-Kivuruga, and extend essential utilities such as clean water and electricity to the area.

Although the exact timeline for the project’s commencement remains undisclosed, officials assure that preparations are progressing rapidly, with land acquisition already underway.
