RAB Expands Cultivated Land by 10% for 2025 Season A
Jean Claude Izamuhaye, the official in charge of crops at Rwanda’s Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB), says that for the 2025 Season A planting season, the cultivated land has increased by 10% compared to the previous season.
He explains that for the 2025 Season A, 802,637 hectares of consolidated land have been earmarked for selected crops. This was achieved by utilizing all available arable land and cultivating 70% of land designated for livestock, planting crops that contribute to food security and also support livestock farming, such as maize, soybeans, and beans.
He says, “This was achieved based on two factors: cultivating all arable land and planting crops that contribute to food security and livestock production on 70% of land set aside for livestock, focusing on crops like maize, beans, and soybeans.”
For maize, 274,379 hectares will be planted, 361,901 hectares for beans, 59,453 hectares for potatoes, 16,605 hectares for rice, 66,426 hectares for cassava, 7,305 hectares for soybeans, 8,078 hectares for wheat, and 8,491 hectares for vegetables.
Specifically, the Eastern Province will account for 48.7% of the maize planting area, 24.5% of the bean area, 56.1% of the rice area, 11.6% of the cassava area, 22.7% of the soy area, 37.7% of the vegetable area, and 0.2% of the potato area.
Izamuhaye is urging farmers to prepare their land early, especially those with pastures, so they can cultivate 70% of their grazing land to maximize crop yields and ensure enough fodder for their livestock.
