Gicumbi: RPF members mobilize to combat malnutrition and stunting

Members of the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) in the Northern Province have partnered with the Gicumbi District authorities in a proactive initiative aimed at tackling malnutrition and child stunting.

This intervention involves the establishment of kitchen gardens and the cultivation of vegetables as a sustainable nutritional strategy.

The campaign, dubbed “Tozwa kurya neza ubigizemo uruhare” (loosely translated as “Be trained to eat well by actively participating”), was officially launched on May 2, 2026, in Nyambare Cell, Cyumba Sector, within Gicumbi District.

Cyumba Sector, which borders the Gatuna frontier, has reportedly been affected by the illicit influx of substances such as Kanyanga (an illegal local gin). This has been identified as a catalyst for alcohol abuse, consequently leading to parental neglect in matters of child nutrition and welfare.

Statistical data from the sector reveals a concerning prevalence of stunting, with approximately 269 children affected, alongside 30 cases of acute malnutrition. Residents were sensitized on the multifactorial causes of these conditions and were urged to adopt optimal breastfeeding practices, avoid alcohol consumption during pregnancy, uphold hygiene standards, and ensure dietary diversity for children.

Experts emphasized that a balanced diet should incorporate six essential food groups: cereals, legumes, protein-rich foods (such as milk and eggs), fruits and vegetables, healthy fats (including groundnut paste), and limited quantities of sugar.

The Mayor of Gicumbi District, Emmanuel Nzabonimpa, called upon residents to prioritize child nutrition by allocating milk for household consumption rather than exclusively for commercial purposes, given the widespread cattle ownership in the area. He also stressed the importance of family planning and addressing alcoholism, which continues to undermine social cohesion and family stability.

Nehemie Munyaneza, a nutrition specialist at Byumba Hospital, underscored that preparing a balanced diet does not necessitate substantial financial resources but rather requires awareness, planning, and strict adherence to hygiene during food preparation.

Ildephonse Niyibizi, Vice Chairperson of FPR Inkotanyi in the Northern Province, highlighted that the initiative is being driven by women’s and youth leagues affiliated with the party, aiming to eradicate malnutrition and stunting across the region.

He stated:“This program specifically targeted Cyumba Sector due to its high incidence of stunting. It is a critical issue because a stunted child cannot achieve optimal cognitive development or contribute meaningfully to socio-economic progress. That is why we are committed to addressing it collaboratively.”

He further added that the second phase of the campaign has commenced, with a strategic focus on increasing male involvement, encouraging men to accompany their partners for antenatal care and actively participate in the first 1,000 days of a child’s life. Additionally, efforts are being made to curb alcoholism and domestic conflicts.

As part of social support mechanisms, three vulnerable families in the sector were provided with cows, while others received food supplies and bedding to improve their living conditions. Assistance was also extended to a mother of twins through the “One Hundred Women” initiative, which aims to empower women economically.

Children in Cyumba Sector were provided with milk and nutritious meals, and they, in turn, appealed to their parents to sustain these healthy feeding practices consistently.
