Youth in Gicumbi lead the way in forest restoration and environmental protection

Youth in Gicumbi District say they have spent the past six years educating communities about forest restoration,an effort they describe as a challenging yet rewarding journey toward changing public perceptions.

They shared this experience on May 21, 2025, during a general assembly of the National Youth Council held in Gicumbi District.

The theme of the day was: “Youth, Let’s Protect the Environment as We Build the Rwanda We Want.”

The day was marked by an exhibition of achievements by the youth, who emphasized their commitment to breaking away from harmful environmental practices such as using firewood for cooking. They called on all citizens to dig water channels and rainwater harvesting pits, asserting that anyone acting against environmental protection is not aligned with their mission.

The President of the National Youth Council in Gicumbi District, Thelesphole Basesayose, stressed that the goal is to set an example in environmental conservation while contributing to national development without causing harm to nature.

“We appreciate our progress in tea cultivation and environmental preservation activities that combat climate change. However, we can’t achieve success by destroying the environment. Let’s call out those who degrade it. We’re also thankful to our partner, Green Gicumbi, for their support in this journey,” he said.

The Mayor of Gicumbi District, Emmanuel Nzabonimpa, noted that the youth in his district are among those who performed exceptionally well in meeting national performance targets. He assured them that local authorities are ready to support them whenever they face challenges.

Pascal Ngendahimana, Executive Secretary of the Northern Province, acknowledged the youth’s commendable contribution to environmental protection. He encouraged them to align their actions with Rwanda’s Vision 2050 and the NST2 (National Strategy for Transformation) goals.

“You’ve made great strides in environmental conservation. Let’s continue working together to achieve our shared vision. In 25 years, a 30-year-old will be 55. Let’s inspire those who think Rwanda is stuck—we should use technology to show them that everyone here is secure and free,” he emphasized.

The event also included a series of community outreach activities. Two cows were donated to Genocide survivors, and sportswear was distributed across all sectors of the district to help amplify environmental awareness campaigns through community sports initiatives.
