Rwanda Set to host the 2nd National Agroecology Symposium
Rwanda is preparing to host the second National Agroecology Symposium, an event organized in collaboration with networks that promote inclusive agriculture and sustainable development.
The symposium will focus on the theme: “Fostering Dialogue on Building Resilient and Sustainable Food Systems through Agroecology in Rwanda.”
This theme reflects Rwanda’s vision of finding lasting solutions to challenges affecting agriculture and food security through a multisectoral approach.
Agroecology is a farming system that integrates traditional knowledge, science, and farmers’ social well-being, with the goal of protecting soil, water, and biodiversity. It promotes sustainable food production methods that do not harm the environment.
According to research conducted by the FAO in 2022, agroecological farming strengthens the soil’s resilience to climate change, improves yields, and reduces the need for harmful chemical inputs. Through this model, smallholder farmers and women gain a stronger voice in land management and decision-making processes.
As stated in the announcement by the Rwanda Organic Agriculture Movement (ROAM), the symposium will serve as a key platform for farmers, researchers, environmental activists, government officials, and private sector stakeholders.
It is expected to provide a space for sharing experiences from other countries, discussing potential legal and policy frameworks, strengthening collaboration across sectors, and encouraging youth and women’s participation in sustainable agriculture.
The event will take place on July 10, 2025, at M Hotel in Kigali, and online participation is encouraged for those who cannot attend physically, by registering virtually.
The organizing and partner institutions include: KHEA, RICCDD, AU, YALTA, Trócaire, AFSA, Animal Welfare Alliance, and IUCN—all committed to environmental protection and inclusive farming systems.
